The Rosary – A Spiritual Weapon of Peace
October is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Rosary, a devotion that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through prayer and meditation. Far more than a simple repetition of words, the Rosary is a powerful spiritual tool, leading us to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of His Blessed Mother, Mary.
A Brief History of the Rosary
The Rosary has deep roots in Christian history. While early Christians recited the 150 Psalms, those who couldn’t read began to substitute 150 Hail Marys. Tradition holds that in the 13th century, St. Dominic received the Rosary from the Virgin Mary to combat heresy and bring souls back to Christ.
Over time, the Rosary developed into a series of Mysteries—Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and later the Luminous Mysteries, introduced by Pope St. John Paul II in 2002.
The Battle of Lepanto (1571)
One of the most significant moments in the history of the Rosary occurred during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The Christian naval forces of the Holy League, though vastly
outnumbered, defeated the Ottoman fleet in a battle that would shape the course of Western civilization.
Pope St. Pius V had urged all of Christendom to pray the Rosary for victory. After the miraculous triumph, he established October 7th as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, later
renamed the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This victory reminded the world of the power of prayer, especially the Rosary, in both spiritual and worldly battles.
