A Shepherd Among Us

Updated: Oct 2

A poem by Deacon Dan Ritchie

From distant shores where palm trees sway,

The Lord once called you on your way,

From Philippines to Edmonton’s land,

You answered Christ with open hand.

At St. Theresa, seeds were sown,

In Wetaskiwin, God’s love was shown,

Sacred Heart received your care,

God’s mercy blooming everywhere.

Three parishes in Olds you led,

By Word of Life, by prayer you fed,

A master strong in Scripture’s flame,

You preach with power in Jesus’ name.

Yet more than words, your heart reveals,

A shepherd’s love that truly heals.

The “smell of sheep” is on your robe,

For you walk with us along the road.

Friendly, warm, a soul who lifts,

Supporting all with Heaven’s gifts,

In every homily, hope is heard,

In every gesture, Christ’s own Word.

Now St. Vital gives thanks today,

For one who guides us on the Way.

Father Nilo, we’re blessed indeed,

A faithful shepherd, rich in deed.
